Existing health tracking apps lacked flexibility, limiting users to predefined symptom lists that didn’t address individual needs. This gap prevented users from effectively managing their health and sharing actionable insights with healthcare providers.

Life redefined health tracking by enabling users to create and manage custom data, addressing the limitations of predefined symptom lists in existing apps. With features like customizable tags and categories, and exportable health reports for doctors, the app delivered a personalized and flexible solution. This innovation not only empowered users to take control of their health but also set a new benchmark for user-centric design in the health and fitness category.

Approach

The development of Life followed a rigorous, user-centered design process aimed at addressing a critical gap in health tracking. The first step involved extensive research, including a competitive analysis of existing health apps, benchmarking their features, and identifying user pain points through App Store reviews and interviews. Recognizing that I was not the target user, I prioritized direct user input to uncover unmet needs, such as the ability to track custom symptoms and categories.


With these insights, I sketched initial concepts to establish the app’s information hierarchy and mapped user flows to ensure seamless navigation. I created wireframes and prototypes, iterating based on feedback to refine usability and functionality. Development constraints, such as relying on a novice developer, required leveraging existing iOS design patterns and libraries to ensure the app was both feasible to build and engaging for users.


After launching a lean MVP, we relied on user feedback and analytics to prioritize new features, like exporting data to share with doctors, and to optimize the app’s overall experience. The idea for Life stemmed from a personal experience. My wife and I were trying to start a family but faced two miscarriages within a year. Each doctor we consulted recommended tracking specific symptoms, such as "Abdominal Pain" and "Ovary Pain," in relation to her cycle. However, none of the existing health tracking apps allowed for this level of customization.

Through further research, I identified key gaps in the market:

  • Lack of Flexibility: Existing apps only offered predefined symptom lists, preventing users from logging personalized health data.

  • User Frustration: App Store reviews revealed widespread dissatisfaction with the inability to tailor health tracking to individual needs.

  • Missed Opportunities: Without the ability to track custom data, users struggled to gain meaningful insights and communicate effectively with healthcare providers.

This discovery highlighted a clear need for a solution that prioritized user control and personalization. Life was envisioned as a tool that would empower users to track their unique health data, providing them with actionable insights and improving the way they managed their health journeys.

To ensure Life addressed real user needs, I conducted extensive research focused on understanding the target audience and identifying gaps in the existing health tracking market. With a clear understanding of user needs from research, I began brainstorming how to create a health tracker that prioritized flexibility, simplicity, and usability.
